tax litigators are simply litigators who can stomach tax. they have very little expertise in tax in general, but they're capable enough and not-hating-tax enough to litigate tax cases.

ask them about tax in general and they don't know squat. they only know ~10 issues that either get litigated frequently or that they had a case on

Tax controversy attorneys still tend to be very "bookish." They're not BSD products liability litigators. They do tend to be more outgoing, extroverted than tax transactionalists, but that's not exactly a high bar. That's not a knock on on either subfield. Most tax controversy attorneys I've met are interesting, somewhat quirky people who somehow have slotted themselves in this curious hybrid of a field where they're dealing with Code but they're also litigating in admin / court settings, at least if the client has the testicular fortitude to go for it (many don't and so a lot of the practice ends up being trading slide decks and negotiating points with enforcement authorities).

Not much at a very high level.

A good number of planners do controversy work related to their main work, and somewhat fewer will see it through to litigation.

If anything, the bar for clients' willingness to "litigate" seems lower in tax controversy than in general civil lit. all else being equal (same dollar exposure; same risk factors and upsides), at least through the administrative portion of the process; though that calculus seems to change and things equal out when it's decision time whether to file in federal court. It's a good way to get a lot of on-your-feet time.
